Currently, I happen to designated as a leader to run the project management and administration of population and housing companies in 9 sub-business units (Jambi, Palembang, Banjarmasin, and Central Borneo). One step in the project is to conduct a census of settlement / Sensus Permukiman. In this January 2014, i must stay for a month in central borneo to do Cencus of Settelement.
A crunchy smile appeared on their faces when I come toward them for Sensus Permukiman/census of settlement. They come from various villages such as Patai, flores, Sampit and Banjar. Their tribes are dayak. Many of them can’t write or read. But, it doesn’t mean they can’t work. They can work productively in accordance with their level of competence
Very Simple Indeed….
When I ask, “what kind of living conditions that you want? what kind of facilities do you need to support your acitivities and your family?” then they just smiled and looked a little confused. Then I asked again, if the facility were obtained from the company is good enough and can full fill their needs?” then they replied with a shy smile “yes, it’s good , it’s enough.
What important for them is clean water, time with their family, eating potluck, and small clinic that they can visit when they are sick. Very simple indeed …. They do not require a magnificent home, a large and big mall or supermarket, a large hospital, or , cafe, bioskop or another facility. They just need a basic thing to live, they are very simple and happy…
They don’t know their date of birth
When we were celebrating our birthday or getting busy in debating about electronic-ID card, there are some people who even do not know their date of birth.
One harvester from central borneo said to me “if only my mother told me about my birth date then definitely I will know now how old I am “, if only my mother didn’t abandon me of course i can ask her about my date of birth.
They are very Grateful
When I ask about “do you satisfy with your condition or with facility that company gave?. With very confidence they said “we are very grateful, because work in Oil palm Plantation we can eat well, we have a beautiful house and we can pay for our children’s education fee. Earlier, it was difficult to have a decent food, clothes, or haven. But, now…it was really great….
They are very friendly…
Although many of them, came from the Dayak tribe supposedly said quite loudly and primitive, but they are different. They are very friendly and warm.
